Assessment Task 2 – Business Plan – Group Assignment
DUE DATE AND TIME: Monday, 23 May by 8:00pm (AEST)
PERCENTAGE OF FINAL GRADE: 50%
WORD COUNT: 5,000 words
In assessment task 1 you produced an outline of the Australian promotional goods/merchandise industry,
which is largely occupied by SMEs. In this assessment task you will be working with an SME operating in that
industry, Fully Promoted Mount Waverley (click on name for link to website), to produce a business plan
for their growth.
Background
“According to the Bureau of Statistics (ABS), there were 2 309 436 small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs)
in Australia in 2018, accounting for 99.8% of all businesses. The majority of Australian businesses are nonemploying
(62% of small businesses or 1 435 547). Most employing businesses (27.1% or 627 932) employed
between 1 and 4 people, whilst 0.2% (3 855) of employing businesses employed more than 200 people”

en#:~:text=According%20to%20the%20Bureau%20of,employment%20in%20the%20private%20sector.)
Fully Promoted Mount Waverley is a franchise. Although franchisees have agreements with their franchisor
that can limit their activities, in this instance it appears that the Fully Promoted franchise in Mount Waverley
has considerable freedom to make independent operational decisions. Please be aware of this whilst working
on your business plan.
The owner has advised that his business has outgrown its current location and he is looking for new premises.
There may be other important information provided by the owner that you will need to consider in your report
in the meetings we hold with him.
Specific Requirements
You are required to form a group of 4 people before the end of Week 5 to complete all parts of this
assessment task. One member should advise Jan Fermelis (jan.fermelis@deakin.edu.au) of your group
members’ names and ID numbers. You will then be allocated your Group number, CloudDeakin Assessment
Task 2 Group locker and Group discussion forum.
Your group is required to act as a team of business consultants to the assigned Small to Medium Enterprise
(SME) which includes:
1. A written business plan to grow the enterprise which incorporates the areas of interest identified by
the owner (for example, new premises)
2. Research evidence on business success factors in the selected industry in which the assigned client’s
SME operates and will grow
3. Integration of academic theory, specialised discipline knowledge and real world business/industry
research data in developing the business plan
4. Explicit consideration of ethics, culture and/or diverse perspectives in the plan and recommendations
5. Specific and actionable recommendations for future growth
6. A PowerPoint slide-set appropriate for presentation to the SME owner.
The Group Assessment Task is required to be delivered in two parts, and submitted as two separate
document files:
PART A: Business Plan: formal written report (80% of the score); and
PART B: Business Model Canvas: slide presentation (20% of the score). No presentation will be required but
your slides should be ready to present to the client.
PART A:
Develop a formally structured, written Business Plan for the assigned SME business which encompasses both
real-world business thinking and specialised discipline knowledge.
Report:
 Length: 4,500 words (4 students).
 Include major sections and sub-sections, as appropriate for the relevant aspects of the assigned SME
business and to satisfy the informational needs of the client.
 All information and financial details should be based on real-world evidence, not guesswork.
 In-text citations must be inserted for all ideas and information obtained from all sources. Citations for
direct quotations and for summaries/paraphrases must include page numbers (or paragraph numbers for
web sources).
 Refer to and integrate academic theory plus business research data in developing the report.
 Submit at the end of the report a list of References containing all academic sources plus
business/industry/professional sources (minimum of twelve sources in total) which were used and cited
in-text within your Business Report using a recognised academic style, such as APA7 or Harvard).
PART B:
Develop a Business Model Canvas (refer Week 5) in PowerPoint as an overview of the changes recommended
in your business plan.
The PowerPoint Slide-set must include:
i. title slide with SME business name, group number, group member names & IDs

iv. one or more slides for cited References (formatted using a recognised academic style, such as APA7 or
Chicago)
Learning Outcomes
This task allows you to demonstrate achievement towards the unit learning outcomes. The ULOs are aligned
with specific graduate learning outcomes – that is, the skills and knowledge graduates are expected to have
upon completion of their studies – and this assessment task is an important tool in determining achievement
of those outcomes.
If you do not demonstrate achievement of the unit learning outcomes, you will not be successful in this unit.
It is good practice to familiarise yourself with the ULOs and GLOs as they provide guidance on the knowledge,
understanding and skills you’re expected to demonstrate upon completion of the unit. In this way they can be
used to guide your study. Learning outcomes that are aligned to this task are:

Submission
One member of the group is required to submit your assessment task in the Assignment Dropbox in the
MPM755 CloudDeakin unit site on or before the due date. When uploading your assignment, name your
documents using the following syntax: <your Group number_[unitcode]_Asst_2_Part[……].doc (or ‘.docx’).
For example:
Group 12_MPM755_Asst_2_Part_A_Business Reports.docx OR
Group 12_MPM755_Asst_2_Part_B_Business Model Canvas.pptx
Submitting a hard copy of this assignment is not required. You must keep a backup copy of every assignment
you submit. In the unlikely event that one of your assignments is misplaced, you will need to submit your
backup copy. Any work you submit may be checked by electronic or other means for the purposes of detecting
collusion and/or plagiarism.
When you submit an assignment through your CloudDeakin unit site, you will receive an email to your Deakin
email address confirming that it has been submitted. You should check that you can see your assignment in
the Submissions view of the Assignment Dropbox folder after upload, and check for, and keep, the email
receipt for the submission.
Marking and feedback
The marking rubric for this task is below and also available in the MPM755 CloudDeakin unit site – in the
Assessment folder (under Assessment Resources). It is always a useful exercise to familiarise yourself with the
criteria before completing any assessment task. Criteria act as a boundary around the task and help identify
what assessors are looking for specifically in your submission. The criteria are drawn from the unit’s learning
outcomes ensuring they align with appropriate graduate attribute/s.
Identifying the standard you aim to achieve is also a useful strategy for success and to that end, familiarising
yourself with the descriptor for that standard is highly recommended.

Extensions
Extensions will only be granted for exceptional and/or unavoidable circumstances outside the student’s
control.
Students seeking an extension for an assignment prior to the due date should apply directly to the Unit Chair
by completing the Extension Request tool which can be under the Assessment tab on the CloudDeakin site.
Requests for extensions will not be considered after 12 noon, Monday 23 May. Applications for special
consideration after the due date must be submitted via StudentConnect.
Late submission
The following marking penalties will apply if you submit an assessment task after the due date without an
approved extension: 5% will be deducted from available marks for each day up to five days, and work that is
submitted more than five days after the due date will not be marked and will receive 0% for the task.
‘Day’ means working day for paper submissions and calendar day for electronic submissions. The Unit Chair
may refuse to accept a late submission where it is unreasonable or impracticable to assess the task after the
due date.
Calculation of the late penalty is as follows: this is based on the assignment being due on a Thursday at 8:00pm
 1 day late: submitted after Thursday 11:59pm and before Friday 11:59pm– 5% penalty.
 2 days late: submitted after Friday 11:59pm and before Saturday 11:59pm – 10% penalty.
 3 days late: submitted after Saturday 11:59pm and before Sunday 11:59pm – 15% penalty.
 4 days late: submitted after Sunday 11:59pm and before Monday 11:59pm – 20% penalty.
 5 days late: submitted after Monday 11:59pm and before Tuesday 11:59pm – 25% penalty.
Dropbox closes the Tuesday after 11:59pm AEST time.
