• As a nurse, you are the last person to see Mr. Doe before he dies in hospital. You believe that he has become mentally incompetent in the last few hours and in that time he has rewritten his will. In the new will he viciously attacks each member of his adopted family and reveals that he actually was born a woman. He then cuts every family member out of the will leaving his fortune to a psychic chatline. Mr. Doe asks you to make sure that the new will gets to his lawyer. Knowing that the document will most likely be thrown out of court but not before the damage to Mr. Doe’s family is done, do you carry out Mr. Doe’s last request and why?

• The sheriff in a small town in Texas is guarding the courthouse against a mob that is about to storm it by force to capture a prisoner who is suspected of committing a brutal rape and murder.  If the mob is frustrated, many people may be killed in the ensuing riot. However, if the mob gets to the suspect, they will kill him before he is able to have a trial. What advice would the utilitarian give to the sheriff in this situation?

• A pregnant woman leading a group of people out of a cave on a coast is stuck in the mouth of that cave. The woman blocks the exit for the rest of the group. In a short time, high tide will be upon them. Unless the woman is freed, the group will all drown—except for the pregnant woman. Her head is out of the cave and above the water line. But, fortunately—or unfortunately—one man has a stick of dynamite. There seems no way to get the pregnant woman loose without using that dynamite, which will kill her and the baby. However, if they do not use it, then everyone but the woman will drown. What is the moral course of action based on the principle of utility?
