Biopsy Lab Report
Purpose: To distinguish between cancerous and noncancerous cells
Create an explanation of what you expect to observe in the tissue samples based on what you know about the nature of cancer.
Materials and Methods
The materials for this lab are four tissue samples and one microscope. The tissue samples are stained in order to observe the stages of mitosis for each cell. Two of the tissue samples are normal (noncancerous) and two are cancerous. The procedure is to place each sample on the slide to observe the mitosis stages of the cells in each sample.
Use the chart below to record your observations of the tissue samples. For each tissue sample, count the number of cells in each stage of mitosis.
Write a 2- to 3-paragraph analysis of your results that includes the following:
- A summary of the results
- A statement that explains whether you got the results you expected, as well as why you did or did not get the expected results
- A summary of the overall knowledge you gained from this lab
Write a 1- to 2-paragraph conclusion that includes a brief recap of the main points in your analysis and a question about the lab topic that you would like to answer in the future. Be sure to address the following question in your conclusion:
- Do your findings suggest any general approaches that might be used to combat the spread of cancer cells? You may want to conduct some independent research to answer this question.
